Why have so few people heard of the Purépecha?
Despite ruling one of the largest states in western Mesoamerica and successfully resisting repeated Aztec invasions, the Purépecha remain largely absent from popular history. This is due to a combination of colonial narratives, fewer surviving written records, and the prominence of the Maya, Aztecs, and Inca in education and tourism.
This project explores the people, landscapes, traditions, and history of the Purépecha region through photography and research.
